A 77-year-old Villager was arrested Tuesday night after an incident that started with him revving the engine of his car at Spanish Springs Town Square.

After revving his engine, John J. Kavanaugh Jr. of 1537 W. Schwartz Blvd. was observed by a Lady Lake police officer driving 35 miles per hour down Paige Place, an area which is a 10 mph zone, according to an arrest report.

When the officer pulled Kavanaugh’s vehicle over and asked if he had been drinking, Kavanaugh replied that he had had “a couple,” paused and stated, “Everyone drinks, this is The Villages,” the arrest report indicated.

Kavanaugh failed field sobriety exercises. He was placed in the back of the officer’s patrol car and began to use profanities, the report indicated.

Kavanaugh provided breath samples that registered .199 and .201 blood alcohol content.

He was booked at the Lake County Jail on a charge of driving under the influence. Bond was set at $1,000.

Kavanaugh had been arrested in 2009 on charges of battery and resisting an officer, but those charges were dismissed by Judge Donna F. Miller after Kavanaugh completed 10 hours of anger management training, according to Lake County Court records.
